Our patron series features three full episodes on the relationship between rock ‘n roll and the occult. The first episode, “The Devil Plays the Guitar,” connects the legends of Robert Johnson back to the violin and forward to modern conflicts between Christians and rock musicians. In “Aleister Crowley Rocks,” we discuss Crowley’s influence on some of the biggest names in UK rock in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s including the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie. Finally, “Voodoo Rock” considers how American musicians—specifically Dr. John and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins—used voodoo iconography to challenge racist attitudes.
